Description of this The Professional Poster
The Professional is a 1981 French action film starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. The film was directed by Georges Lautner. The screenplay was written by Michel Audiard, Georges Lautner, and Jacques Audiard. The film is based on the novel Death of a Thin Skinned Animal by Patrick Alexander.
Ennio Morricone composed the music. The theme song “Chi Mai” became an instrumental hit.
French secret agent Josselin “Joss” Beaumont is sent to Malagawi, an African country, to kill the dictator and president of that country. Before this can happen, the political situation in France suddenly changes, and assassinating the Malagasy president is no longer desirable. Since it is too late to prevent Beaumont from accomplishing his mission, he is betrayed by Malagawi. He is arrested by Malagasy authorities, tried under the influence of drugs, and sentenced to life in a forced labor camp in a show trial.
After two years, Beaumont manages to escape with the help of a local fellow inmate, who is killed during the escape. He returns to France to seek revenge. To do this, he wants to stick to his mission of assassinating the Malagasy president, as he is expected in France in the coming days as a state guest. Beaumont informs his former superior, Colonel Martin, of his intention via a coded telegram. Colonel Martin then does everything possible to prevent his former agent from carrying out his plan and sends agents after him. Rosen, an ambitious commissioner and head of a ruthless special unit, stands out in particular. Along with his men, Rosen also exerts intense pressure on Beaumont’s wife to find out where he is. Later in the film, Beaumont and Rosen engage in a pistol duel, during which Beaumont shoots Rosen dead.
Eventually, Beaumont manages to sneak into the heavily guarded castle where the President is staying and complete his “mission”: He leaves his empty pistol with the President, and when the President appears at the window, gun in hand, Assistant Inspector Farges of Rosen’s force accidentally shoots the President with a sniper rifle. Beaumont leaves the castle unmolested and heads for the helicopter of the African President’s favorite prostitute, which is ready to leave. Colonel Martin informs the Minister of the Interior, who finally gives the order to fire, so Beaumont is shot dead at the last moment by Farges.
