Description of this 101 Dalmatians 1961 Movie Poster
101 Dalmatians is a 1961 American animated film, produced by Walt Disney Productions and based on the 1956 novel 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, and Wolfgang Reitherman, it is Disney’s 17th animated feature film. The film tells the story of a litter of Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by the villainous Cruella de Vil (“deVille”), who wants to turn their fur into coats. Their parents, Pongo and Perdita, set out to rescue their children from Cruella while also rescuing 84 other puppies purchased from pet stores, bringing the total number of Dalmatians to 101.
The film was released theatrically on January 25, 1961, and was a box-office success, lifting the studio out of the financial slump caused by Sleeping Beauty, a more expensive production released two years earlier, and becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year at the North American box office. In addition to its box-office revenue, its commercial success was due to the employment of inexpensive animation techniques—such as the use of xerography during the inking and painting process of traditional animation cels—which helped reduce production costs. Disney then released a live-action adaptation titled 101 Dalmatians in 1996 and its sequel, 102 Dalmatians in 2000. A direct-to-video animated sequel to the 1961 film, titled 101 Dalmatians II, was released in 2003. A live-action prequel titled Cruella, directed by Craig Gillespie, was released on May 28, 2021, in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access simultaneously.
