Description of this The 5th Element Poster
The Fifth Element is a 1997 French science fiction, action, and comedy film directed by Luc Besson and starring Bruce Willis, Mila Jovovich, and Gary Oldman. Set primarily in the 21st century, the film’s central plot involves the survival of planet Earth, which becomes the responsibility of Korben Dallas (Willis), a taxi driver and former Special Forces commander, after a young woman (Jovovich) falls into his cab. To do this, Dallas teams up with him to retrieve four mystical stones essential to Earth’s defense against the imminent attack of a malevolent cosmic entity.
Besson began writing the story that became The Fifth Element at the age of 16; he was 38 when the film was released in theaters. Besson wanted to film the movie in France, but no suitable facility could be found; filming took place in London and Mauritania. Actors Jean “Moebius” Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, whose books inspired parts of the film, were hired for production design. Costume design was by Jean-Paul Gaultier.
The Fifth Element received mostly positive reviews, though it tended to polarize critics. It has been called the best and worst summer hit of all time. The film was a financial success, grossing over $263 million at the box office on a budget of $90 million. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive European film ever made, and it remained the highest-grossing French film at the international box office until the release of Intocable in 2011.
In 1914, an archaeologist and his assistant meet in the Egyptian desert to study carvings on the walls of an ancient temple. According to the carvings, every 5,000 years, a being called The Evil One arrives on Earth, and the temple’s purpose is to house a power capable of defeating him. A local priest, anxious that the archaeologist be able to decipher the true nature of the temple, unsuccessfully attempts to poison them.
Extraterrestrials known as the Mondoshawan manifest on site and in a secret chamber remove the weapon capable of defeating the Great Evil that appears every five thousand years, believing that the presence of archaeologists shows that the earth is no longer a safe place to house it. . The weapon is composed of four stones, representing the four elements, and a sarcophagus in the form of a human being. The Mondoshawan promise their human contact, the priest, that they will return with the Elements in time to stop the Great Evil, but an accident forces them to leave the chamber key with the priest and leave instructions to be passed on to their successors until their return.
In the mid-19th century, the Evil One reappears in space as a gigantic black fireball, destroying a battleship on the ground. The current priest of the Mondoshawan Order, Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm), reports to President Lindberg (Tom Lister Jr.) about the history of the great evil and how it is that in ancient times, the Mondoshawan created the temple, the stones, and the fifth element, explaining that the latter is a perfect way of life that, by placing itself in the center of the temple, channels the power of the other four elements forming a light capable of destroying evil; However, if evil manages to place itself in the temple, it will first be able to use the altar and the stones to spread its power and exterminate all life in the universe.
When the Mondoshawan return to Earth, they are ambushed by the Megalores, a belligerent and forbidden alien race hired by businessman Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman), who in turn was hired by The Evil One to seize the 4 stones. The Mondoshawan ship is destroyed and The only thing Earth scientists can recover is a hand from the fifth element. This limb is taken to a scientific center in New York where they completely reconstruct the “survivor,” who turns out to be a girl (Milla Jovovich). She wakes up scared and confused by what escapes her confinement, ends up jumping off a ledge and landing in the flying taxi of Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), a former Special Forces commander.
Before passing out, the girl names Vito Cornelius, so Dallas takes her to the priest and apprentice, David (Charlie Creed-Miles). Although Korben only manages to spend a few minutes with the girl, he is quickly attracted to her, but, before being removed from the place, he only has time to discover that her name is “Leeloo Minai Laketareba-Laminai-Tchai Ekbat De Sebat,” so he decides to nickname his Leeloo.
On the other side of the city, the Megalores meet Zorg and deliver the stone chest, recovered from the remains of the ship in exchange for more modern weapons to stock up on. Unfortunately, they discover that the chest was empty, which is why the human initially refuses to provide them with weapons and later betrays them by detonating their weapons after his retreat.
At the same time, Leeloo explains to Cornelius that Mondoshawan has foreseen this scenario and has decided to send the stones to the Fhloston Paradise liner so that one of their allies, Diva Plavalaguna (Maïwenn), can keep them until the right time. The Mondoshawan informs the Earth government of the stones’ location, so the president orders the army to begin an operation to recover them, unaware that they are being spied on by Zorg’s men, those who want to know where the stones are to steal them, and also by The Megalores, those who want revenge on Zorg, collect a ransom.
On the orders of the President, General Munro (Brion James), re-enlisted Korben and ordered him to travel undercover, as the winner of a radio contest, to meet the Diva on a luxury cruise in space. Zorg’s men, the Megalores, and Father Cornelius, unaware that he is an undercover agent, Korben is confronted and ambushed one after the other in an attempt to usurp his identity to secretly enter the cruise. This causes a series of massacres and confusions that end with the real Korben approaching the cruise accompanied by Leeloo and Cornelius as a stowaway.
Already there, Korben must attend a presentation of La Diva accompanied by Ruby Rhod, a scandalous radio announcer and Boring. During the show, the Megalores attack La Diva’s rooms and murder their employees while trying to steal the stones. Leeloo recognizes them as responsible for the Modoshawan’s death, confronts them, and easily kills them before being riddled and seriously injured. This causes the Megalores to decide to take a more aggressive approach and take control of the ship. Meanwhile, Zorg steals a chest belonging to La Diva, assuming the stones are inside, and escapes without first planting a time bomb to destroy the ship.
During the hostage situation, La Diva is killed, but with his last strength, he manages to reveal to Korben that he is carrying the stones inside his body, from where the human manages to retrieve them; after this, he plunges into a savage fight against the aliens until he manages to assassinate his leader and make them surrender. The cruise triggers an alert when the bomb is detected, so the ship is evacuated while Zorg returns aboard upon discovering that the stones were not in the chest, dying in the explosion. On the other hand, the evil one sends a part of himself to Earth to settle in the temple.
Korben, Leeloo, Cornelius, and Ruby manage to save themselves by stealing Zorg’s ship before the explosion, starting a race against time to reach the temple before the evil one. The four of them make their way to the Egyptian temple’s secret weapon chamber, as the Evil One’s planet approaches Earth at high speed.
The group manages to activate the stones, but Leeloo refuses to cooperate as he has become disenchanted after witnessing the aggressive and belligerent nature of humanity, furthermore, he feels that he lacks a true purpose as an individual that justifies his life. Dallas explains that despite the During the war, there were still other reasons why life is worth protecting, such as love; he confesses his love for her and kisses her. Leeloo combines the power of the stones and releases the Divine Light, making The Evil One latent like a new moon in Earth’s orbit.
