Description of this Fear Over the City Poster

Fear Over the City is a 1975 French crime film directed by Henri Verneuil and starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. It was Belmondo’s first time playing a police officer.

Police officer Jean Letellier is under pressure, as the infamous gangster Marcucci has publicly escaped his grasp. Furthermore, during the chase, an innocent bystander was killed by a stray bullet. Letellier is investigated for firing the fatal bullet.

Before Letellier is cleared, a serial killer begins murdering young women, each time leaving a strange message at the crime scene. He calls himself “Minos,” after the Divine Comedy. The murderer always states that he punished his victims for what he considers their impure lifestyle.

While Letellier still has no trace of Minos, he discovers Marcucci’s whereabouts. As before, Marcucci makes a dramatic escape when Letellier confronts him. But this time, Marcucci dies in the process.

Marcucci’s death is no relief to Letellier, who is now publicly accused of neglecting the Minos case in favor of settling his personal feud with his late nemesis.

Minos continues to murder and leave provocative clues until Letellier can identify him. The serial killer can only barely elude Letellier, who pursues him across the rooftops of Paris. His next move is to take hostages in a skyscraper. Letellier decides he’s had enough and takes flight. From a hovering helicopter, he jumps through the apartment window and knocks Minos to the ground.
