Description of this Jean De Florette Poster
Fanny is a 1932 French romantic film directed by Marc Allégret and starring Orane Demazis, Raimu, and Alida Rouffe. It is based on the 1931 play by Marcel Pagnol. It is the second installment in the Marseillaise film trilogy, which begins with Marius (1931) and ends with César (1936). Like Marius, the film was a box-office success in France and is still considered a classic of French cinema. It was filmed at the Billancourt Studios in Paris and on location in Marseille. The film’s sets were designed by art director Gabriel Scognamillo.
The story takes place in Marseille. Marius, the son of the bartender César, has a love affair with Fanny, a local girl and the fishmonger at the port. Marius then fulfilled his dream by embarking for the seven seas. Fanny then discovered that she was pregnant with Marius’s child, a shameful situation in the community since she was a single mother with a father incapable of ensuring her future and that of her child. She accepted her mother’s advice to marry a more prosperous port vendor, Honoré Panisse, who was 30 years her senior. A few months after the wedding and the birth of the baby, Marius returned and tried to win Fanny back.
