The film opens with a robbery scene, where Cartouche, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, meets Venus, a beautiful gypsy woman played by Claudia Cardinale. The two fall in love and decide to work together to rob the rich and distribute their loot to the poor. But their rebellion attracts the attention of the police, led by Lieutenant General La Reynie, played by Jean Rochefort, who launches a ruthless manhunt to arrest them.
