Description of this vintage Licence IV sign
Official French signage, this Licence IV sign indicates that an establishment is able to sell all types of drinks. An alternative to much more expensive enamel signs, our version offers you an cheap vintage metal sign. Of course, this plate is not the same as an official license; it simply serves as information to your customers that you hold the license.
Origin of the IV license plate
This famous license was created by the law of September 24, 1941. It is also called a full-service license or large license. By holding it, the person is authorized to sell category 4 and 5 beverages (distilled spirits and rums). The law requires any establishment holding this license to display it in a visible manner for its customers: thus, a simple display outside is sufficient. Please note that the IV license allows the sale of alcohol without food: you are therefore not required to have a restaurant license.
It is difficult to obtain a IV license, as these cannot be created: it is therefore necessary to purchase them. To achieve this goal, you must obtain an establishment that already has a license IV, or request a transfer of a license that has been purchased from another establishment. FYI, since 2016, it is important to know that licenses can be transferred within the same region (this was originally only possible within a department). Also note that a license transfer to a new municipality is subject to prefectural authorization. The price of official license IVs sells for thousands of euros (sometimes, depending on the location, it costs more, such as up to €50,000 in tourist locations).
