Description of this Movie Poster La Grande Vadrouille

La Grande Vadrouille is a French comedy film directed by Gérard Oury and released in 1966. With 17 million admissions, the film is one of the greatest successes of French cinema and was only dethroned from the top spot in terms of audience figures in 2008 by Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis.

In 1942, during the occupation of France by Nazi Germany during World War II, a British bomber was shot down over Paris while returning to England. The three parachuted British men landed in different locations. One of them, Peter Cunningham, met Bouvet, a house painter, by chance, and together they escaped across the rooftops to the apartment of Juliette, a young puppeteer. Meanwhile, Peter’s compatriot MacIntosh meets Lefort, a vain conductor, after landing on the roof of the Paris Opera. The two Englishmen intend to cross the demarcation line with their commander Brook to the so-called “free zone” (i.e., the part of France not occupied by the Wehrmacht), from where they plan to return to Great Britain.

Lefort and Bouvet are initially reluctant to help the Allied soldiers. But when the Germans also pursue them due to their unwitting complicity, they must go into hiding and confide in the British, for better or for worse. The five men and Juliette begin the rest of their escape, which proves difficult and dangerous, as it leads them to occasional and fortuitous encounters with the German occupation forces, led by Major Achbach of the Wehrmacht. Despite Juliette’s help, Peter Cunningham is arrested on a train, but with the help of local nuns, the other fugitives find refuge in a convent and a hotel. Disguised as German soldiers, they later manage to free Peter and, after a spectacular chase, they all escape in two gliders to the “free zone.”
