Description of this The Goonies Movie Poster

The Goonies is a 1985 American adventure film directed by Richard Donner. The screenplay was written by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, who also served as executive producer and second unit director.

The Goonies are a group of adventure-seeking teenagers who travel around their town and its surrounding areas. An unscrupulous real estate shark wants to buy the kids’ subdivision (called Goon Docks) for a country club, and the parents don’t have the money to fight the impending foreclosure.

When the Goonies—the inventive James Bond-addicted Data, the fat and clumsy Chunk, and the loudmouth Mouth—gather at their leader Mikey’s house, they make an extraordinary discovery in the attic. Mikey’s father, an archivist at the local museum, has stored some exhibits there, including a treasure map that supposedly leads to the hideout of the legendary One-Eyed Willie, a pirate.

After incapacitating Mikey’s big brother, Brand, the Goonies follow the map’s directions to an abandoned summer restaurant on the beach. This is where the Fratelli gangster family has set up shop. After being kicked out by the Fratellis, the Goonies are joined by Brand, his true love Andy, and their friend Stef, and attempt the adventure again. In the cellar, they discover not only the hidden entrance to the treasure cave, but also the criminal nature of the Fratellis.

When the Fratellis unexpectedly return, the Goonies escape through the secret passage, except for Chunk, who has been separated from the group. Chunk is ordered to go find the police, but is captured and interrogated by the Fratellis. After also discovering the entrance, the Fratellis follow the Goonies. Chunk is locked away with Sloth, the Fratellis’ abused and extremely disfigured son. After being scared at first, Chunk gradually begins to befriend Sloth, and the two eventually escape and follow their friends into the caves.

In their quest, the Goonies stumble into a series of deadly traps that Willie has built to protect his treasure, which they only manage to thwart with great difficulty and luck. Furthermore, the Fratellis remain stubbornly on their trail. They eventually find One-Eyed Willie’s pirate ship, the Inferno, and discover Willie’s remains and his immense treasure on board. But soon after, the Fratellis catch up with them and force them to discard their loot and jump the plank.

But before the worst can happen, the Goonies are saved by Sloth and Chunk. While the teens escape to the shore, the Fratellis attempt to load up on treasure, but become too greedy and trigger a final trap that causes the cave to collapse. The Goonies, along with the Fratellis, manage to escape the cave through a hole and make their way to the nearby beach, where they are rescued by police officers, reporters, and their parents, who were already desperately searching for them. The Fratellis are arrested, except for Sloth, whom the kids defend.

Without the treasure, it seems the Goon Docks are lost forever. But before Mikey’s father signs the deed of surrender for the colony, the Walsh housekeeper finds jewelry in Mikey’s bag of marbles that the Fratellis hadn’t seen, resulting in the foreclosure being called off. And as the Goonies rejoice in their triumph with Sloth, everyone present sees the Inferno, released by the cave’s collapse, drifting away into the open sea.
