Description of this Destroy This Mad Brute Propaganda Poster
It is directly inspired by the work “A Gorilla Abducting a Woman” (1887) by Emmanuel Frémiet and represents the German enemy in the form of a gorilla wearing a Prussian spiked helmet reading “Militarism” and possessing blond mustaches, a direct reference to Kaiser Wilhelm II. He is also armed with a club on which is written “Kultur”, and holds a naked woman in his other hand. In the background, we see a totally destroyed Europe where we can see the ruins of the cathedral of Reims. The gorilla then prepares to land in America, where we see “America” under his paws.
