Description of this Vichy Government Propaganda Poster
On this 1942 poster, we see in the center the glorification of Pétain as Father of the Fatherland. We see the French flag, the motto “Work, Family, Fatherland” which replaces “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”.
This propaganda poster wants to show Pétain as the embodiment of national cohesion of the “Eternal France” type. We can find the principles of his national revolution program according to the motto expressed:
Work: It is expressed by work in the fields on the left, and by a blacksmith on the right (this is reminiscent of the hammer and sickle of the Soviet flag). There is a critique of industrialization that has completely turned society upside down: Pétain advocates a return to so-called “classic” work in the fields.
Family: The marshal is shown as the protector of the family, protecting women and children, including a little girl holding a baby in her arms.
Homeland: We find the French flag and the Gallic rooster, thus indicating to the French that loving their homeland is their duty.
